Humour 閑話

This town in Australia is called Eromanga. In Aboriginal language, this means 'hot, windy plain'. Japanese readers will probably think it means something else.

Town names

A lot of towns in Australia have Aboriginal names. It is quite common to see the names repeated. I have been told this is the plural form, to indicate many. For example:
  • Wagga Wagga - "Place of many crows"
  • Bindi Bindi
  • Kurri Kurri - "Hurry Along"
  • Gulin Gulin
Are there any places in Japan that are like this?

Wagga Wagga -
Bindi Bindi
Kurri Kurri -
Gulin Gulin

Two Goannas and a Snake

This piece is just 40 cm by 40 cm, and one can appreciate how much detail goes into a work like this.

Several species of venomous snakes can be found in Australia. A chart of the snake toxicities are available here.

Boomerang

This boomerang is made from native Australian wood. It has been hand-decorated by a young Aboriginal woman, and tells the story of of her people who live by the sea.

aborigine boomerang

There are several varieties of boomerangs. This traditional hunting boomerang is long on one side, and short on the other side. There are more Aboriginal souvenirs on sale at the Aborigine Art Gallery souvenir shop. Purchases will support employment in these communities, and help preserve their culture.

Kangaroo

Kangaroo, acrylic on canvas

This is a dot painting in the style most people know as Australian Aboriginal art. The colours were selected to match the pigments that were used by their ancestors in the red deserts of Australia. Very ancient rock and cave paintings have been found with native animals painted in this abstract style.

Some of these dot paintings are simply exhilarating to see in person, because they can be so complex, and yet simple at the same time.

The motifs of round circles can be found carved into stones, and some of these carvings are tens of thousands of years old. These symbols are sacred and the meanings of these symbols are not revealed to outsiders.

This may come as a surprise to many people. For aboriginal people, their rites and religion are practiced in secrecy. It is not their custom to encourage other people to adopt their faith.

This has caused controversy in the recent past, over what places are sacred, and what places aren't. The Australian desert has a lot of mineral resources. If a place has religious significance to the Aboriginal people, the Government can be very reluctant to grant mining permits. However, because of the secrecy around the faith of the Aboriginal people, it is not possible to know with 100% certainty whether a place is sacred or not. This is a very complex problem, and requires a lot of patience and tolerance of all the people involved.

Dreamings

The Aboriginal people have a lot of folk stories, which relate to animals. These stories have morals in them, and form the basis of how the Aboriginals conduct themselves.

Nowadays, there are a sizable number of Aboriginal people who are Christian. However, these stories - called "dreamings" - are still part of their cultural heritage and cherished.

The painting above is full of fine dots that are barely visible on the computer screen. Click on the painting to see it in full detail (warning: this is very large).

Can you identify all the native Australian animals ?

Comments are most welcome!

I'll provide the answers in the next few days.
